One of the struggles that many couples face is how to develop their spiritual relationship with God as a couple. These challenges include understanding how to be a spiritual leader, how and when to pray together, learning to study scripture together and how to define a Christ-centered marriage. It is important for couples to understand that they each have a unique “couple personality” that defines their relationship. This couple personality needs to be considered as they work to develop a practical approach to developing their spiritual relationship. Too often, couples try to force one method for growing spiritually into their relationship that becomes awkward, leaving them discouraged in their walk together.
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."
- Deuteronomy 6:4-9
This scripture provides great guidance for couples to begin to define their spiritual relationship together and as a family. Relationships grow through communication. As you develop your spiritual relationship, the important thing is to talk about it together as you go through your normal routines. Use the time that you currently spend together to expand your discussions to include your thoughts about God and what he is doing in your lives. For example, use your time out for a jog, an afternoon bike ride, whiling driving around town, eating together or relaxing around the house. The point is to make it a natural part of your daily life and conversation. Be creative as you find new ways to enjoy your spiritual growth together.
We have developed weekly devotionals for couples and families to talk about throughout the week. Make it fun and enjoy your time growing together in faith.
